In the African Yoruba Orisa tradition, ancestors are the foundation of all things. They are the link between what is seen and not seen on the earth plane. You can talk to them and ask for their help and guidance when you need it.Known my many names Ancestor Sticks are used when calling on the energy of the ancestors to stand with us in the work that we do. Decorated with fabric or ribbon of nine colors representing the ritual number 9 of completion and in some cultures death. In this workshop participants will honor the tradition of pounding for the ancestors by decorating their own Sticks. Each participant should bring 1 piece of fruit. A picture of Ancestor-No one in the picture should be alive or an object to represent them if a picture is not available. An open mind and heart. Linking our present work of activism and inviting our ancestors to stand with us in this work is the purpose of this workshop
Attendees will co-create a healthy space for deep psycho-emotional-spiritual release. This will lay groundwork for our subsequent exploration of possibilities for free, loving and abundant, blak communities.
We are U Medics (U is for Ujimaa, Kiswahili for "collective work and responsibility"). Our vision is to build a grassroots network of Black people around Chicago prepared to create justice for their communities in emergency situations. This workshop teaches participants to become first responders for their families and communities. The skills we teach include first aid for massive bleeding injuries, how to communicate with police when they arrive on the scene, and how to intervene if someone is having an asthma attack.
Imagine your cells carry the memory of your ancestors footsteps walking through swamp lands. You catch glimpses of their eyes sparkling through Spanish moss, heartbeats pounding as they sit watching and waiting. Imagine now, you are inside your Mother's womb, and in the stillness of your warm slumber you are awoken by nightmares of dogs chasing you through that very same swamp. Your tiny heart beats faster as your Mother is witnessing the brutalization of yet another Black life on television. The link between these memories is imprinted not just on your cells, not just your mother's cells, but also her mother's, and her's and so on. Imagine what it would mean to hold in your cells the memory of something before that; when your mind, body, and Spirit remembered what it felt like to be free.
