Shade & Shoutouts is a caucus dedicated to Black folks engaging with one another to understand a variety of Black experiences through the lens of popular culture (including Sample Topics: (Subject to change per audience requests) Rachel Dolezal and complicating authenticity in the Black community, Empire, Gay Marriage/ SCOTUS, Dark Girls/ Light Girls: Colorism and Misogyny, Respectability Politics, Transphobia & Black Liberation, Amber Rose and more Bad Bitches, Don Lemon & more Uncle Toms: How Skinfolk Ain't Always Kinfolk, Orange Is the New Black, Black-ish, Scandal, etc. representations of the Black body and Black experience in music videos, television shows, films, current events, etc.) We will question mythologies and stereotypes surrounding Black identities, as well as social issues that plague and complicate the Black community (i.e. colorism, trans inclusion, queerphobia, nationalism, what is ratchet?, sizism, religion, respectability politics, etc.).
